Tarot Tuesday #11 - High Priestess : Silver Era Tarot

Card: The High Priestess
Deck: Silver Era Tarot
Artist: Aunia Kahn (Blog)
Author: Russell Moon

About the Card: The High Priestess strikes a flirtatious pose, at odds with the usual imagery in the Priestess pose. The card retains a lot of the Rider-Waite imagery - the black and white pillars become marble pedestals, and the expression on the woman's face hints at the secrecy and introspection behind her eyes.

About the Deck: Silver Era Tarot is a Rider-Waite-inspired deck that brings a New Age/21st Century feel to the traditional poses and symbolism. Anyone who knows and reads with Rider-Waite will feel comfortable with Aunia Kahn's interpretations of the traditional themes. The cards are photo-collaged images featuring real people in hand-tinted black and white photos. It has a unified feel, unlike many photo-collage decks which feel like a collection of images rather than a themed Tarot deck. This is the first deck I've featured here that I've had trouble choosing a card to show. There are so many other cards that are so hauntingly beautiful that I want to show them all. The Silver Era Tarot is scheduled for publishing in Spring 2010 by Schiffer Publishing, and you can sign up for a mailing list which will announce when it is availble for pre-ordering.

Tarot Tuesday #7 - Spiderwoman

Card: Spiderwoman
Deck: Daughters of the Moon
Artist: Ffiona Morgan
Buy This Deck: Daughters of the Moon Tarot Cards and Greeting Cards

About the Card:
Spiderwoman is the Tenth card in the Major Arcana, representing the card more commonly called The Wheel of Fortune. In the DOM tarot, the card shows one of the three fates spinning webs that are patterns within patterns.

About the Deck:
Daughters of the Moon Tarot
was first published in 1983. While the artist is listed as Ffiona Morgan, the cards are a collaborative effort of many different artists, and the deck is maintained by Ms. Morgan. The original deck was printed in black and white, and readers were encouraged to color the images themselves to personalize the deck. I owned an original DOM tarot, and deeply regret having lost it over the years in various moves. The deck is feminist and wiccan - more properly, Dianist/Goddess-centered. The illustrations are marvelously eclectic. The company is ethically-centered and Earth-conscious.

Post About: Your impressions of the Spiderwoman, the Wheel of Fortune, your favorite Wheel of Fortune representation or anything else having to do with Tarot or this card.

How to Participate:
  1. Visit us on or after Friday to see this week's Tarot Card.
  2. Write a post on your blog inspired by the image or the questions.

Tarot Tuesday #6 - Shadowscape: Judgment

Judgment - Shadowscape Tarot
Artist: Stephanie Pui-Mun Law
Unpublished
Card Details

About the Deck:
The Shadowscape Tarot is a work in progress by fantastical artist Stephanie Law. The deck is painted in (mostly) watercolor. The images are absolutely delicious - the colors misty, light and airy, the intricacy and attention to detail amazing. While the deck is a work in progress and not available for purchase, you can purchase prints of the artwork at the artist's website. The individual Tarot cards can also be found as cross-stitch patterns at Heaven and Earth. The deck is scheduled for release by Llewellyn in 2010.

About the Card:
Easter weekend (in all its many variations) seemed an excellent time to feature a Judgment card - and the butterflies and flowers made this card an ideal choice. What does the divine trumpeter say to you?

About the Artist:
Stephanie Pui-Mun Law is an accomplished artist and illustrator with quite an impressive list of publications to her credit. In addition, she is the author of Dreamscapes: Creating Magical Angel, Faery & Mermaid Worlds with watercolor, a book of watercolor techniques used in fantasy art.

Tarot Tuesday #4 - Cat's Eye Tarot: Temperance

Temperance - Cat's Eye Tarot
artist: Debra M. Gavin

Black and white - water and sunlight - opposites attracting and blending?

What do you see? What do you feel?

Debra Gavin brings her experience as a veterinarian and knowledge and love of animals to this beautiful and very different Tarot deck. It's unpublished, so if you want to see more, you can only see them at the artist's homepage (linked above). The deck is fully illustrated with cats that show more personality than many of the humans featured in other decks. Somehow, each image manages to capture the essence of the card without relying on the usual symbols. If this deck were available, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

  2. Write a post on your blog inspired by the image or the questions.

Top o' the mornin' on a beautiful St. Patrick's Day. It seemed only right to use a Celtic styled deck for today's Tarot Tuesday card.

What does Anna Franklin's High Priestess say to you?

Is she a mystic? A seer? A wise woman in the making? Is she you or someone you know?

Tarot Tuesday #2 - The Ace of Pentacles - AnnaK Tarot

The Ace of Pentacles - AnnaK Tarot

The Ace of Pentacles captured me the moment I saw it - perhaps because I've been thinking about gardening for weeks, and planting seeds and waiting to see what grows.

What are you planting in your life? How do you tend your "seedlings"? What sort of "buried treasure" do you find when you look? Are YOU a buried treasure?

About The AnnaK Tarot:
This week's Tarot Tuesday is a real treat for me. It's from a deck that goes on sale TOMORROW - so it's brand spanking new. The AnnaK Tarot carries through the Rider-Waite symbolism in most cards, but there are exceptions. The deck is a limited edition published by the author. It comes in a lovely box, and includes an instruction booklet. You can view all the cards in Anna's deck at her own website or read her own interpretation of the Ace of Pentacles. She also has a rather neat javascript Tarot reading.

Buy This Deck from: AnnaK starting March 7, 2009
(Note: This is NOT a paid post or an affiliate link. I'm sharing because I think the deck is beautiful, and I believe in supporting independent artists and spreading good words and works.)
